On the 8th of February 2011, Cassie McCord was killed after being hit by an 87 year old driver who mounted the pavement. Cassie was only 16 years old.
Three days before the accident this driver was involved in another accident and police advised him not to drive. Police then contacted the DVLA but whilst waiting for a decision, the elderly driver continued to drive.
Cassie’s law sets out to give police the opportunity to temporarily suspend driving licenses of those who they believe are unfit to drive. The DVLA would then be contacted and they have the ultimate decision whether to permanently suspend the license or return it. With Cassie’s Law, the DVLA would still have the deciding power as before but it would mean police are able to prevent potential accidents that could happen in the time that the DVLA require to make their decisions
This law is not specifically aimed at elderly drivers; it is aime at ALL unfit drivers whatever their age.
At the moment we have over 3,000 signatures. Please help us reach the target of 100,000 so this potential law can be discussed in the House of Commons. Don’t let another life be tragically cut short.
